The Shield has a few key points to remember.
- Connect your elbow to the outside of your thigh
- Keep your hand away from your head, making it more difficult for your opponent’s foot from wrapping around your guard and kicking you in the brain stem
- Point your Shield at roughly a 45 degree angle to create a 90 degree angle between your femur and your opponent’s shin bone
- Keep the knee of your posted leg at a slight bend to absorb the shock of the incoming kick
Doing the 4 things above will allow you to remain in balance and viable for an immediate counter. Remember if all you wanted to do was defend, it’s generally better to move your feet. If you’re going to take a kick, even with a Shield, your opponent should be getting something back in return.
