I think the article linked above does a pretty good job of explaining Shooto. But in essence it is a relatively modern art, formed on the synthesis of arts such as Catch As Catch Can, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sambo. This is a gross over simplification but hopefully it begins to answer the question you aske Aaron.

Not only from a technical perspective but from a political one as well. There is so much to learn from the "shots" that these guys took.

And speaking of vomit, I once watched Coach Kiser's dog, unload a nasty pool of diarreah, then lap it up, throw it up then eat it again. Now there's a hard headed fool who's Hell bend on NOT learning from the mistakes of his past.

I too love the history of this stuff. Not only is fascinating, but you can also (as they say in pool) "go to school on another man's shot".. you can look at what was/is successful.. but you also have the advantage (hopefully) of looking at what failed and learning why.. learning from the mistakes of others as well as your own mistakes.. otherwise you return to your own vomit and are doomed to repeat the same mistakes..
Someone once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and again and expecting a different outcome.

Interesting article.. thank you for posting that link Brian.. I'd not seen that one.
There's a couple of gaps in the story with Maeda though.. the match where he kicked Riki Chosu in the face.. Maeda had plans on leaving.. and was looking to make a statement.. He and Chosu were two of the biggest "babyfaces" (fan favorites) for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (also know as the IWGP or International Wrestling Gran Prix.. btw.. New Japan was owned and run, not to mention founded by Antonio Inoki.. that name should ring a bell)..anyway.. Maeda and Chosu had a little friction heat and Maeda was a little jealous.. he also resented the fact that Chosu was of Korean descent.. AND Chosu was also one of the bookers/decision makers within the company and Maeda was given no such power..
On the night of this incident.. Chosu and Maeda were TAG TEAM PARTNERS! That's right.. they were working TOGETHER.. on the SAME TAG TEAM.. he sucker kicked his own tag partner in the face.. full throttle.. full shoot (a "shoot" is pro-wrestling lingo for when things are either for real or delivered full power and with bad intentions).... broke/crushed Chosu's orbit/eye socket! Chosu tore after Maeda and basically they had to be seperated by the ref.. their opponents and the ringside boys. It was completely premeditate as his grand exit from the company by him.

THIS is what we're talking about when we use the term "chain wrestling" or "scientific wrestling"..
iirc the SHOOTO stuff was started by Satoryu Sayama (The Original Tiger Mask).. Sayama was a guy who dabbled/competed in boxing and muay thai and later trained pro-wrestling puroresu under Karl Gotch at the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Dojo.
