Hey guys! I was just thinking the other day about what techniques seem to cause the most pain.  I'd like to see what we come up with.  My personal opinion goes as follows.

1. Short Arm Scissor/Elbow Compression lock/Arm Crush.  There is really no describing this one, I have not found a submission that beats this one on the level of shear pain.  Most grown men end up yelling a good bit when they aren't expecting it, and haven't had it put on them before.

2. Front Face Lock.  This Technique is almost tied with number one, while it is the most dangerous technique I'll list here and it is amazingly painful, there is just a different type of pain about it.  It feels more grating and grinding with a little nerve spaz here and there, it relies on the threat of structural damage rather than just shear pain like #1.  But still a very very close second.

3. Kimura/Double Wrist Lock.  There is no way to describe this type of pain, amazingly the Americana type submissions don't even come close to this amazing technique.

4. Calf-Slicer/Calf Crush from half guard or back mount.  Hot knife through butter, where your calf is the butter, enough said.

5.  Ankle Lace.  This little know Sambo submission, is like a combination Calfslicer and Ankle Lock.  Very Very unpleasant!

I know this list will change based on body type and personal experience, so whats your most painful submissions?

These are all my own thoughts, I'm sure someone has an article somewhere like this but not that I have read.  Again this is my personal opinion.

Great thread Idea buddy!!!

1. The most painful hold I was ever put in was a rolling Grovvit around the throat. It's like a regular Grovvit but it's done from a guillotine position. As I got caught in it I tried pushing into my partner and he dropped to the ground, did a backward roll with his feet wide apart and ended up doing a seated Grovvit. The worst part was the position I was in combined with the extreme choke. My legs ended up in almost a box splits type of position and my back was curled over so much my spine felt like it was burning. The choke was so tight it felt like all the blood vessels were making their way to the front of my face and trying to get out and my head felt like it was ready to explode. I could feel my windpipe getting crushed into the bargain. All in all a truly horrible hold.

2. Reverse Triangle choke.  This one was very sore. I felt my training partner going for the hold and I tried to pull my head out. He didn't realise I had freed my neck and he squeezed his thigh muscles as hard as he could around my face to get the tap. Before I could tap I felt my Jaw pop out of position. My Jaw has never been the same since and dislocates on a regular basis when Im laughing, Breathing hard when exercising or just grappling.

3.Armbar. Just a regular old armbar hurts like hell when you're caught in one.

4. Triangle. When someone has a well tight triangle, the helpless feeling combined with the quick choke and the compression of the leg muscles are just so painful. See the part in my number 1 about the blood vessels and head exploding. same applies here.

5. I'll go with the short arm scissors. See number 1 in TCMAG's list above.

I haven't heard of the Ankle Lace. Ill have to see that one. Sambo has some crazy pain submissions!

I think the most painful lock is the Brachial Plexus Cutter.  I've been told that it isn't actually the Brachial Plexus and I know it's not but whatever it is, it hurts really bad!

Cant believe I forgot about the Wrist Lock, I haven't been training with them so much that I'd forgot how bad they hurt. Good call man!

When Yamasaki hugs my bicep and when he kneels on my shin… Those are the two most painful locks I have felt. The Grovit sp? is also miserable. Oh yeah and the short shot to the neck. It's not a submission but I would rather get kicked in the leg or punched in the face then chopped in the neck.

well… i'd ahev to go with:

*a forearm crusher from a salaverry position using both legs, shin as an anchor point and other shin to weigh down

*the calf crusher from the bottom of a half-guard

*shin choke- this one i've only had done once. the guy went down for an armbar but as i pulled on my own arm he hefted back onto my chest, trapping my arm, flipped his leg that was across my face and pressed all his body weight into my neck through his shin

*calf slice from rear mount

*omoplata where my opponent has postured up into almost to all the way around to in front of me so that i cant roll out

Well since I posted my reply to this thread, I have been introduced to the
"Taint Ripper". That makes my list for sure.

I would also like to add… Anything Billy Robinson does to my list.

For sure, that looked quite nasty!  As for Billy Robinson, I'm sure he is just so good at what he does that any move is magnified by ten fold.
