Tonight we learned the sickest firemans I've ever seen.  It's like a lateral firemans, and Coach Wells said it was a nice modification for fightin in submission wrestling as whenever you use a high crotch in SW, you're potentially exposing yourself to getting your arm figure foured between your opponent's legs and getting crucifixed et. al.

The modified fireman's is set up identically to the reguar one but instead of high crotching you put your arm to the outside of their leg and take them over in more a sideway's throw.  The mechanics for the thrower are exactly the same.  But for the one being thrown, the fall more sideways then forward.

Anyone else come across some nice SW friendly takedowns?

Interesting topic

In Greco-roman wresting there is a version of the fireman where you grab his arm with both of your arms (in Greco-roman you aren’t allowed to grab the leg). The Greco-roman version would be safer from subs but also harder to pull off the throw (no free lunch).

I suppose most if not all takedowns have risks. The leg takedowns are probably the riskiest for being submitted while body-lock takedowns are the safest.

Ok my vote for safest takedown from subs is the lateral drop. Plus it looks way cool!

I've actually been lateral dropped during a fight.  And while I flew through the air, I was like "damn, that just happened… wow!  what a cool throw."

No, but I'm due for another shoot with Coach Wells some time here in the not so distant future.  When I get him on film next time, I'll ask him to demonstrate this one.

I've posted a variation of the SW Friendly Firemans in the Damage Control MMA: Cutting Room Floor Edition Blog Post.
