Hey Brian,

How effective do you feel the inside leg kick is? Even from my experience in TKD I knew how the outside leg kick ( or knee to the thigh ) can paralyze your leg but I don't really see the inside leg kick doing the same amount of damage.

Sorry for the delay JMall, it's been a crazy month and a half.  Coach Kiser and I just acquired a new facility for our gym today and shuffling paperwork and finances around plus teaching, keeping the family happy, etc. etc. has kept me on the run.

But I have been thinking about how to answer this question.

I've never seen or experienced it myself, the inside leg kick paralyzing the leg yet.  But I do know that you will experience gradual muscle function.  And it is painful enough that you will eventually have to do something about it, which usuallys sets up other techniques.  Khuen Khru Will Bernales, my instructor is notorious for going to the inner thigh/thighs  (sometimes he'll go left kick to left inner thigh, right kick to right inner thigh), just to get you to give up the outside angle.

I've also experienecd excruciating pain when Coach Billy Robinson put his elbow into the femeral artery there on me (see the shin lock clips).  So I know it can be extremely painful.  But to answer your question, I've never seen anybody KO'd from there.

That doesn't mean it isn't an important tool for your arsenal though.  I've seen very few people KOed with the Jab, but it's one of the most important punches in the game.  IMHO.

Sounds like you have been busy. I hear you about the jab and avoiding continual kicks to the inner thigh. So it's more or less to score points and set up other tekks.

Ah, I think I may have found one.

Check it out at the 1:00 minute mark.  That inside leg kick really seems to have done some damage.  TBA Thai Tests are No Joke!

The late Sifu Gibson (the one holding the mitts) is doing the testing. He was my first TBA instructor, the world has missed him and will continue atleasst for me.

I see what you mean Brian. That was a crazy drill where you let the guy holding the mitts tear your legs up but you can't clinch, counter or move to avoid his leg kick.

As I was reviewing the "Anatomy of A Leg Kick and Beyond" Article and the re-posted videos in the members area I remembered that we had this piece in there.  Although it does not directly address the "effectiveness" of the inside leg kick, it is related in that it discusses targeting and set ups for this attack.  Members can view the high speed download here.

That video isn't a drill as much as it has a requirement for progression in the TBA organization. You have to do so many techniques, I don't have details since I am not to that part of my path in Muay Thai. Someday I hope to get crushed also, it a right of passage so to speak.

Yeah as wylothar said, that wasn't a typical day in a TBA Camp gym.  Khuen Khru Tim Mousel was being tested for his instructorship in the TBA in that clip.  He did not pass.  But even after that beating he still manned up and took another one, finally passing.  I have a ton of respect for Khuen Khru Mousel for taking such a hard test… TWICE!!!

As well as a deep respect for all my TBA brothers and instructors.

I've uploaded the remainder of the Leg Kicking Anatomy video clips but have not had time to put them into membership pages yet.  In the meantime, I'll embed the inside leg kick one here since it is another related video.

Ok, that makes more sense. It wasn't clear to me from the video that it was a testing excersize. You would definately have to train and condition your legs to pass a test like that.
