Escaping the established sprawl

Hey guys, one of the great things about grappling is the constant innovation, so I thought I'd post a question for y'all in regards to escaping the sprawl.

So, your partner thwarts a takedown, and sprawls on top of you, and then hangs out there (possibly delivering knees to the back of your head)

There are moves like the starfish and pulling guard, but, are there any other innovations or tricks, or new takes upon the old classics?

I like the old classics whenever possible.  My 2 personal favorites are what we call the "S Turn Sit Out" and the "360 Sit Out".

ah, thanks, I missed these videos in the shuffle.  I've heard it called the "starfish" as well, but I like your take on a few of the finer points.  Thanks coach!

Another thing that comes to mind when talking about being sprawled upon, is that not all sprawls are created equal.

Some guys will sprawl and immediately spin to quarter position or back mount/Crab – Frog – Owl Ride

Some guys will sprawl and take double underhooks

Some guys will sprawl and take double overhooks

Some guys will sprawl and take an over under grip

Some guys will sprawl and crossface

Some guys will sprawl and guillotine, anaconda, 10 finger choke or some other sort of strangle attempt

Some guys will sprawl and front headlock/grovit

Some guys will sprawl and back out

Each of these scenarios will offer different options and countering opportunities.

I agree with Dr. Sick. Every sprawl is it's own look. I wrestled for many years and I could list multiple pages of counters and escapes. It just comes with practice, repetition, and critique that you will learn your rythym and what counters you can pull successfully from the sprawl. Everyone is built differently. Some guys can get real technical and flashy. Some are just powerhouses. And some can use the simple moves and work them until they have made them unstoppable. I'd say just work with someone with experience who knows what they are talking about (such as the wonderful coaches here), try looks and practice, practice, practice. Good luck!

I like to use an arm drag to counter the cross face, and if I can sense the sprawl coming, I like to turn a double into a single.  You can see an example of this with :24 seconds left in the Level 3 Takedown Defense Focus Mitt Drill Here
