Is Shinya Aoki's Tights A Factor?

After the GSP greasing fiasco w/ BJ Penn, Eddie Bravo commented that fighters should be allowed to use gi pants or grappling tights in UFC.  It helps absorb grease & sweat and makes it easier for submissions for the bottom.

Shinya Aoki is one of the best at finishing w/ subs, and uses grappling tights in his Japanese fights.  If not allowed to use tights in US, do you think it will be a factor in his fight against Gilbert Melendez tonight?

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

I think it could be a factor…just take a look at George Sotoropoulos' last fight…he had ankle tapes, knee sleeves, etc. on.  Might as well have been wearing pants…anything you can do to increase friction makes it easier to get subs from the bottom regardless of how sweaty you or your opponent gets.  I'm sure Aoki's game isn't totally dependent on the shorts, but he may be in considerably more trouble if he winds up on his back with Gil Melendez on top of him without them.

I don't know about the tights but the straight right counter to the butt scoot is definitely a factor.  I love the finishing submission style of Aoki.  I'm not a big fan of his "bad boy" antics but his grappling is amazing.  Still, I'm really feeling the anti-grappling against the grappling dependent fighter.  0-4 for Aoki at this point.  He's really got to do something amazing to keep the Japanese dream alive.

The cage was definitely a factor too.  You've got to know your cage tactics if you want to fight inside one.

I liked several things melendez did to shut down the game of Aoki. The foot control  with the lunging punches were working great. He actually did it in low gaurd control also.

The level change and punch to stop the shot was great also.

I liked that fight.

Yeah it was quite innovative.  Once on his knees he took Aoki's up kick out of the equasion.  He was far enough away to keep Aoki from utilizing any kind of effective guard, but close enough to drop heavy bombs when the opportunity arose.
