Werdum Silences Doubters by Tapping Fedor Emelianenko and Proving Jiu
Jitsu Still Matters

Earlier this week Kid Nate and I tried to combat the growing lunacy online that saw
people denying Fabricio Werdum was a fit opponent for the great Fedor
Emelianenko. We explained that Werdum was one of the five most dangerous
men in the world on the ground, that he could tap anyone at anytime,
that he had proven that skill time and again against top level
grapplers.
Well, against all odds, Werdum erased all doubts by submitting the
greatest heavyweight in the history of mixed martial arts. Fedor
Emelianenko had taken on all comers with an aggressive, but highly
disciplined game. Against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Fedor operated very
carefully in the Brazilian's closed guard. Werdum didn't get that level
of respect-and it cost Emelianenko dearly.
Werdum seemed to bait Fedor in, flopping to the ground after a series
of punches that didn't seem to land cleanly. Fedor pounced quickly, but
Werdum was ready. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion secured a
triangle-armbar combination that was deep. The Russian scrambled and
squirmed, but escape was impossible. One single tap ended the fight and
changed the MMA business forever.
The internet will no doubt explode in the days to come, but remember
who told you this was a real fight. Congratulations to Fabricio Werdum.
Going forward I suspect people won't be so quick to dismiss him. When
you are that good on the ground you are definitionally dangerous. I hope
Alistair Overeem remembers that when the two fight later this year. And
thanks to Fedor Emelianenko. There will never be another like him.

Wow. I always suspected Fedor was a little bit overrated at being the "greatest heavyweight of all time", but he still is an amazingly talented fighter. It may be his style of aggressive sambo and kickboxing that is still kind of new to the sport which may have took him to the top. But this is MMA and anyone can be beaten, even the Muhammad Ali of MMA.

I wouldn't dimish the greatest, so far. He lost via submission. MMA is a forgiving sport. Look how Randy is still percieved and he has been 50/50 on his last four fights. One loss in nearly 10 years still puts Fedor at a pinnacle scale. We do now know he is human and not a cybergenitic soldier. What will this loss bring out in his next fight? This maybe the springboard to another string of dominating crushings. Maybe the coals of desire got cooled, and this loss will stoke the fire. Even Ali lost 3 of his last 6 fights and was still considered the greatest.
I hold FEDOR in very high regard, as I do Brock, and Couture. Randy has done so much to grow the sport in the USA. Brock has great potential to broaden that base even further, and he has youth, athleticism and mass that going to be the start of a whole new heavyweight division. Him and guys like Carwin are huge, and the soft serve heavies are in for an awakening. I don't have single favorite fighters, But these three are on top of my list.

I think you made a great point Wylothar, They say that when a fighter starts talking about retirement then its often already time to hang up his gloves. I think the desire may have waned in recent times, as far back as the Arlovski fight possibly. It's craziness to scramble with a current ADCC champ on the ground. If the fight had stayed on the feet then the fight may have been totally different. I know Dana White has a massive grin on his face now.
