Is anybody else into this show? I love watching all of the crazy make shift stuff they invent but the arrival of the new recon sniper made me realize how essential survival skills would be in such catastrophic and hopeless conditions.
Dr. Sick, I remember you saying once that you were a survivalist of sorts, any good online resources to satiate my interest in the topic?

I'll post some stuff when I get a minute. I've been saving the Colony for a rainy day. Haven't watched it yet. I loved the first season. Part of the wait has to do with the marketing of the second season. Their commercials made it seem more "Reality TV Drama" vs. the hard core survivalist stuff that was in the first one. Hopefully I'm wrong.
My favorite stuff on youtube (and I'll post some soon) has been the blade making, clay pot firing, and recently bundle bow making stuff. In fact, this past weekend, I made a bundle bow from willow and it was surprisingly powerful. My arrows are crap so I don't think I could hit anything but proof of concept was there.
I've always liked the primitive fire making videos and have also been interested in flint knapping. The only problem is that I can't find any flint or chert in the hills where I wander. I found a bad @$$ trail thought that has wild onions as far as the eye can see in the spring and boysenberries in the fall with a trout stream nearby. Excellent survival area… when it's not winter.
Oh, also would like to try Birch Tapping. This stuff is so fun.

Woo! sounds like my area. Every summer a few buddies and I take only what we can carry and head up to the Missouri River and go trekking miles into the wilderness for a week or so. Incredibly fun. We only bring essential tools and our brains. We've gotten lost multiple times, but we all are pretty well trained in survival. I've actually built a fire with two sticks and a string. It sucks.
Being out with nature, way out in the wilderness is plenty of fun. I've begun to watch The Colony and it is quite interesting.

There are definitely more melodramatic moments however it is primarily due to their incompetence with survival skills. This season's cast is way overloaded with manufacturing people so they are constantly at each other's throats over issues revolving around food and security. The necessity of survival skills has become blatantly apparent.

If you're talking about the series, I agree. If you're talking about everyday living, I totally agree. I see survival skills as simply an extension of Martial Skill. It is self reliance and defense of one's life vs nature, elements, various threats. You never know when you might need it. Hurricanes hit, Earthquakes Shake, Dollars, Governments, Stock Markets can fall. It's always nice to have a plan B.

I'd imagine that you would also gain a general sense of security knowing that you are capable of sustaining your own life under any circumstances.

That's pretty insane. I watched another one where he shows how to make your own blowgun with a view parts you can find from Home Depot. Have you made any of his projects?

Just made some bundle bows last weekend. Used willow instead of what he had. Also scrapped the paracord because it was too expensive for a weekend proof of concept project. Used duct tape instead. Works amazingly well. Discovered that lighter, thinner arrows travel at a much higher velocity and thus straighter… basic ballistics I suppose. Also found that the thicker the bow string, the more push you get out of the release. I want to go fishing with it just for kicks. :)
