I saw on Dr.Sicks Facebook page that Coach Billy Robinson has passed away. 🙁 such sad news. I always loved seeing his instructionals on DCMMA, his knowelege was second to none. I was very sad to hear of his passing, as some said on Facebook I think DCMMA should make a tribute video or maybe a video combining all his clips. If they do I think everyone should try to share the video on all their social networking sites. I think we should is for a couple of reasons. The first is that Coach Billy was a largely unheralded figure with his exceptional knowelege and he deserved to have a lot more recognition than he ever truly got. The other reason is that he was a huge ambassador of catch wrestling. To help spread the word of catch wrestling alone would make coach Robinson happier than anything.

Rest in peace Billy Robinson, you are already sadly missed!

Well said Rob . Im amazed that such a national treasure should have been allowed to slip from the limelight in this country .Thanks to everyone who brought his skill and insight to us .
God bless coach Robinson .
Paul.

I’m working on one of the last clips we ever shot with Coach Billy as we speak. Should be up by tomorrow but if not, no later than the Weekend.

Just before he died, I learned that in his hometown, calling someone by their last name was an insult. I felt terrible about this as I have always referred to him as Coach Robinson (out of respect). Now out of that same respect I refer to him as Coach Billy.

Any of you UK folks know anything more about the Last name insult culture?

Just seen the blog, very nice sentiments Brian! For some reason the video clip isn’t showing up on my ipad. The rest of the article is there though.
In regards to the second name insult I have never heard of it before at all. In fact I thought it was more a sign of respect because if you had called him Coach Billy when you first met him he may have thought you weren’t on such good friend terms to refer to him any his first name.
It’s a bit like regular school. You always refer to your teachers as Mr Smith or Mr whatever their second name is as a sign of respect and to establish a pecking order in which you are not on first name basis and there is a level of authority in place. I always referred to my Tae Kwon -Do coach as Mr.Cambell which again everyone did as a sign of respect.

In all the video’s I have seen of Billy Robinson with yourselves he seemed like a totally genuine and warm hearted person. If the name was considered an insult from where he was from I’m sure he realised the culture you guys are from it isn’t considered an insult or he would never have given his time to you so often.

If it is an insult then it must be a very localised insult because it’s definitely not widespread across the uk.

That’s what I always thought as well, but apparently that was not the way it was thought of in Wigan. I don’t ever get the impression that Coach took offense but I still found it interesting that, that is why all his student’s call him Billy.
