Hey guys, Recent article about the amount of power and muscle output involved in the good ole push up. I love them and you should too.

Awesome article, thanks for sharing. Very interesting. I'd never really thought about that before to be honest but I enjoyed finding out the percentages. Thanks buddy!

that was a heck of a find!  pretty interesting data and it's good to see the hard facts rather than base it on perception and he-said-she-said of which was "tougher" for you.  to further that, it would be interesting to delve into the different muscle recruitment regarding varying hand positions, such as: regular base (as done in the study), wide, close base/diamond, and on knuckles.  as many of us can already figure out, each uses varying muscles differently, but to what extent?  very good stuff there, RJD!

From my own experiments I have found if I do sets of push ups throughout the day, in sets I get a more leaner physique. I am a big believer in the "greasing the groove" method. I do alot of push ups with resistance (resistance bands and the power push up) and find my core gets tighter (stability) and worked more.

My big interest in push ups came from an old IronMan magazine I found years ago. It had an article on the old school bodybuilders who did all kinds of push up variations. Another reason was a old mma fight years ago. One of the fighters did these crazy hard punches. Every time he landed it was like a whip. He literally locked out on every punch. If you don't know what I'm talking about just watch people on focus mitts. They do these half punches. I thought if I can do alot of push ups it would help me punch at full extension and hit harder.

In the end I don't think the push ups helped my punching except for learning muscle tension. Still one of the best exercises in the world.

no doubt.  i believe the push-ups engage many of the muscles not only in your triceps and chest, but also those that help stabilize, such as your core muscles and some in your shoulders.  i can still remember being real young and one of my uncles had this killer handshake.  he told me that if i wanted it too, i needed to do push ups off my knuckles.  i thought he was kooky then (i was MAYBE 6 at the time), but now i know better.

I haven't been following this thread a whole bunch. I will say the scapular pushup did tons to help ailments in my shoulders. I got it from a training series called magnificent mobility with Eric Cressy and Michael Robertson.

I always do my scap pushups. Great exercise. Big fan of Coach Cressy's.
