Insane!  I am a big fan of Imanari.  His understanding of leg locks and how to play the leg locking game are outrageous.  His overall grappling is absolutely phenomenal.  But, I always enjoy watching simple fundamentals overcome unnecessarily flashy and crazy moves.  I once heard boxing coach Marvin Cook say, "If you ever watched Larry Bird play Basket Ball, he'd be one of the slowest guys up and down the court, he could barely jump and all the time his buddies would call him up to bust his chops about their making the ESPN Highlight reel.  But you see, Larry would just tell them how great their 360 dunk was, but then excuse himself to go polish all his Championship Rings.  I want to be that guy.  You go ahead and get on that highlight reel, I'm going to stick to good sound fundamentals and I'll see you at the Playoffs."

It's hard to say this because I really enjoy the no fear attitude that guys like Imanari bring to the game, but I think he could still play without fear and still not break fundamental rules like throwing himself underneath his opponent, or having lack luster takedowns and non-existent striking.

I also loved the anti-grappling, 0-reference point striking from the guard.  Good stuff!

That was really cool. It's very interesting to see the complete contrast in styles. As you said some basic striking and some proper takedowns would take Imanari to another level. The body scissors takedown to armbar was awesome and nearly came off however If he had a solid takedown and decent on top wrestling control he could pick where and when he wanted to take a leg.

I love the Larry Bird analogy. I remember my brother used to have an NBA superstars video and it had highlights of all the NBA's best players. Larry Bird's one was pretty dull compared to the others but he definitely got the job done on the court.

Basic Fundamentals can take you a long, long way.

Sweet!

My old wrestling coach told me, "A champion will do the simplest things better than anyone else." Then he would go on to say how the flash and shine aren't neccesary to be great, just as long as you have an unshakeable foundation and untouchable will, you can go far.

Sugar Ray Robinson had his basic fundamentals so perfected, that when his impeccable punches, from the jab to the bolo, didn't work, he practically made new punches up on the spot, and they worked.

Dan Gable drilled until his basic double leg and sprawl were so reflexive to him that he once said, "I shoot, I score. He shoots, I score."

There's a story in the Bible that talks about a house being built on sand, and a house being built on rock. It wasn't meant to be related to combat sports, but I'm going for it. The house on the sand washes away and collapses at the first sign of trouble. This is like someone who doesn't have the basics mastered. When something isn't exactly how it was in practice, they have to stop and think and eventually crumble. When somenone has correctly practiced the fundamentals to the point where they are reflexive, however, they see something that isn't exactly how they drilled it, and have enough of a natural feel for the sport and shut down the adversity. Just as a hut built on rock will stand the test of time, a fighter with a solid fundamental foundation will look adversity in the face and smile.
