Tonight while rolling I had my opponent in a knee slicer, with my legs on his stomach and his back facing up towards the sky.  I had a figure 4 on the leg I was attacking and it was going good.  Then he pulled a little on my foot to loosen it up, maybe twisted a little but not much, all the sudden there is this loud audible *POP* and my ankle didn't feel amazing at that point. I tapped and after some untangling of limbs I examined my ankle. I couldn't put any weight on it for about 2 min.  However now I can walk on it just fine with little to no pain, but that might be the IBProfen I took right afterwards.  The pain is centered in between the actual ankle protrusion, and that muslce you have on the outside of your foot that kinda bulges.  I can flex it back comfortably enough, but flexing it forward or to the side creates pain.  Has this happened to anyone here? If so how long did it take to heal, and what did you do for it? Thanks a bunch. ~TCMAG

I'll be watching this thread with interest as I've had a perma sprain for some time now.  I don't recall ever hurting it recently.  No pops or subs on it.  I just woke up one morning and it hurt.  Mine is more on the inside though, between the Maleaolas and the first Metatarple (I don't know if I spelled those right).  Anyway, I'm hoping for a miracle cure here.

there is a good chance that the *POP* you heard was just like when you crack your knuckles, however, the pain you feel is obviously not normal.  do you have, or have you had, any swelling in that ankle?  my guess is an ankle sprain.  bruising, swelling, instability, and painful movement are common symptoms experienced after a sprain occurs.  the best any athletic trainer would tell you to do is the R.I.C.E. acronym: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.  the ice constricts the capillaries (blood vessels) in the affected area and restricts the amount of fighting cells allowed to that area, the cells that fight the stuff created when you have inflammation.  the presence of those fighting cells (to keep it simple) usually cause swelling, thus the ice again to constrict capillaries.  compression, such as a tight ace wrap, assists in minimizing swelling as well as keeping the affected ankle elevated, especially if you still have swelling.  the most important aspect of that though would be the rest, in my opinion.  take it easy and give it some time to heal.  it's always better to sit out a few weeks rather than experiencing an injury that doesn't fully heal … that compromises the area and increases the risk of more significant damage later to maybe ligaments or tendons.

sorry for the "war and peace" version, but i started college as an athletic training major for 2 years before switching.  oh, another thing, alternate the ice on and off for 10-15 minute sessions for about an hour.  lightly stretch the ankle lying on your back and using a belt to loop around your foot to give light resistance.  when you're healed, be sure to do ankle rotations at the start of you workout (during warm-ups) to be sure that your joints are loose too.  i hope all gets better!  heal up, fighter!

Thank you very much bro! I went and stopped by the house of a guy I know who is an Ortho guy and he told me pretty much the same thing.  Said I had torn the ligament running towards the toes on the outside of my foot or something like that.  Its doing much better now, there was/is a bit of swelling but its down quite a bit now.  I'v wrapped it for the past 4 days with an ace and orthopedic foam to support the joint and compress it and force the swelling up. Along with ice, can't say that I'v elevated it to much though.  I'll keep it braced for a bit and the next few times I train, its almost pain free but I can still feel that its not "right" if you know what I mean.  Thanks alot!!

A little progress, still a little swollen. I'm going to go back to some light training tonight.  Thanks again!
