Keep up the good work

Welcome to the forums SimonT!  We cannot believe the wonderful amount of support we've experienced from our friends from the UK.  Hey, would you mind telling us Yanks the difference between the UK, Great Britton and England?

I'm terribly uneducated when it comes to stuff like that.

Oh, and if you're lookin for Billy Robinson stuff, be sure to check out our newest blog post "CSW, CACC, BJJ, MMA Training, Oh my!" it has an awesome commentary on culture.  We've also got some new technical footage we're saving for down the road a little so stay tuned.

Thanks again for your support.

Hi, the US is a collection of states each of which considers itself "independant", some more than others i.e. Hawaii (own flag, formerly belonged to the British Empire hence the Union Flag in the corner), but collectively it is the United States.  The United Kingdom is along the same lines, but we have four actual countries that were brought together to prevent future wars, these are, in order of population (and many would say importance, that will cause trouble ;) ), England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.

Great Britain can be used instead of the United Kingdom, but it really pi**es off each seperate country to be known as the UK or GB before your own country eg calling Michael Bisping or Dan Hardy a Brit rather than English really gets up our collective noses :) Calling any one of us the other ie calling me a Scot or a Welshman a Scot would in all likelyhoodresult in someone wanting to bang with you. Though its like everywhere else we call each other all the time, but dont like it if someone else does it :)  I have just got UFC 2010 and I can label myself from England, but they only have the Union Flag (the flag of the UK/GB) and that my friend is an insult.

Being a relatively "new" country the US  allways seems to be "in your face" and that doesnt sit well with the old school countries here in Europe, hence the reason you get the Fench being pains in the ar*e towards the US, with others backing them up (dont worry they dislike us even more, as they have all in their turn lost wars to us over the last 1000yrs). The British (yes all of us) dont ever feel inferior because we know we are top of the pile and always will be, we look to the facts of what the British Empire gave the world over a 500yr period, the US would have remained part of the Empire if King George had listened to all his advisors and not been addled with veneral disease. Canada, Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, most of the Caribbean, half of Africa, most of the Asian sub continent are still members of the Commonwealth and help each other finacially and militarily, the Queen is still the Head of State for most of these countries as they did not want to lose the links with Great Britain. wherever you go in the world if they speak English its because the British were there long before and brought a basic system of government, justice and miltary order.  Dont forget we have been fighting wars for nigh on 2000yrs on our own soil, so the combat arts run deep, soldiers returing from all parts of the world would bring bits they had learned and pass them on to others.  Indian wrestling, the Filipino arts, Thai boxing, Karate all got brought back over hundreds of years, there is a good foundation of Jui Jitsu, Aikido, Judo all over the UK, but the BJJ section is growing fast and I think wrestling is making a comeback, albeit slowly.

Hope this condesed version isnt too long for all you youn 'uns :)

Ha ha lol.  That was awesome!  I feel educated.  And I mean that.  I had no idea.  That was a great summary of all those different terms.  Thanks for the heads up too.  I probably would of called someone by the wrong name and made them angy at me.

You will see how bad it can be at the World Cup, only England qualified out of our Home Nations (thats the term used over here) so Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as countries will be cheering on every team we play against, US first match :)

Oh thats socccer to you guys, the most watched and played sport in the world bar none (inc mma), you Americans really need to catch up with the rest of the world you know :)

Hi Simon. Good to see input from across the pond.

Interesting that you mention UFC 2010 not having all the Home Nation flags.  This site has only a few different flags that you can choose for your avatar (you can upload your own image if you want).  But I think they have included all of the Home Nation flags as well as UK flag.

And they have the Hawaii state flag.

Thanks for the overview.  I had no idea my nationality was owed to a case of royal venereal disease.  Fascinating!

Cheers!

Thats real interesting, I'm from Scotland and I know many people here much prefer to be called Scottish rather than British. What I didn't realise that the English prefer to be called English rather than British. I thought the English were happy to be called British.

You're dead on about the football though – come on ANYONE that can beat England hahahaha.

I think the only reason nobody supports England in football is because every time there is a major competition the commentators and analysts speak about it as if it is their devine right to win. When they get put out of a competition fair and square the commentators are so bitter in the following matches saying 'that really should have been England in there, We're a far superior side'. The worst one is they bring up 1966 ALL the time. At the start of the last world cup my friends had a bet to see how long it would take the commentators to bring it up, It took something like 16 seconds into the first match and it wasn't even England playing haha!

I believe its the attitude of the commentators that makes us support all the other teams. I've been all over England and I don't have a bad word to say about the place or the people, Those commentators make you angry though hahaha

1966 is when England won the world cup for anyone that doesn't know.

NaturalBornFighter – I don't know much about football.  But I absolutely love Scotland for sharing your amazing single malt Scotch Whisky with the rest of us.  It's make the world a much better place! Smile

I swear we have the same type of thing going on here in Utah.  There are some Utahns that will cheer on anyone who plays against BYU for the exact same kind of reasons naturalbornfighter1 mentioned about commentators and fans for England.  They're similar over here with our local private College.

Naturalbornfighter, cmon British! Course I prefer English I dont know anyone who doesnt (inc your good self :) ).  Spot on with the commentators, Andy Murray case in point, he is Scottish and then British it really annoys me when English media try to make him "one of ours", we have rubbish tennis players so stop stealing other countries ;)

The population of England is 10x that of Scotland so commonsense says we should have 10x as many international players to pick from (though you wouldnt guess the way some of them play), is it any different in MMA? There are more US and Brazilian fighters out there purely because of the size of the populations than the UK, if you then break it down further for every 10 English fighters in the UFC (say) there would only be 1 Scottish one.  I think a lot of fight fans forget to take country size into account when bragging about who the have at the top of the game in any sport.

Dr Sick, now you are talking gibberish to me :) BYU? Is it a university and what sport american rugby (sorry football :) )

Naturalbornfighter, we want our own Parliament too :(

Sterling, If I remember rightly (long time since I read up on it), most of the founding fathers didnt want to seperate from Britain, but a vociferous minority wanted to govern themselves and went about causing mayhem to the British (similar to the afghans at the moment). the violent minority eventually got their way with the help of some very poor decisions by "Mad" King George. Things could have been so different.

The English were/are very good at getting others to come up with ideas and inventions and utilise them for their own benefit ie Most of the best engineers in the world were Scottish and so were used to further the enlargement of the British Empire (naturalbornfighter will like that one)

ps

I havent done so much Math in ages ;)

Heehee! It's kind of strange in Glasgow with the whole Scottish/British thing. Most people will say they are Scottish and don't like the fact it says British on their passport but there is a large community that call themselves British first and Scottish second. The football teams Glasgow Rangers and Celtic are bitter rivals. Many people have died over the years disputing these games of football. but there is the underlying religious themes of catholics and Protestants. The Protestants have a large number of followers that are known as Orangemen as they are followers of William of Orange, they put the Queen above everything else, regularly shout 'rule Britannia' and often have Union Jack flags hanging in their residence. Many of them happily support England in football too.

It's actually very complicated and I try to avoid it as much as I can because I believe only trouble can come from it. I knew a 16 year old boy who had his throat cut from behind as he was walking down the street. It was on the day of a Celtic-Rangers match and he was wearing a green Jumper (Celtic colours). He didn't like or follow football.

My friend's uncle was kicked to death in the middle of a busy street for wearing a Celtic top. Wrong place Wrong time.

I even got punched in the mouth myself one time because people behind my friends were singing sectarian songs, I turned around to see what all the noise was about and as I turned a fist landed on my teeth. I hadn't even done anything, I was just walking home.

BrianD might be able to explain it all better.

That religion for you. I think the Celtic/Rangers rivalry is rather unique because of the religious dimension, its a little bit of Northern Ireland dropped into Scotland and the innocent suffer as usual.

As they say religion and politics two things never to discuss with strangers;)

You're totally right. Haha, At least I'm behind a computer screen and not face to face heehee.

It's such a messed up situation though. I've had drunks walk up to me in the pub and say 'Celtic or Rangers?'

They want you to choose. If you choose wrong be ready to fight. It's not plesant at all. I really wish it never existed at all. I think half of them don't even know why they even support the teams. It's horrible. The worst part is the level of football they play is so bad I don't know why anyone would watch it, compared to the premiership or la liga its like watching primary kids.

I think I just got the UK thing.  I went to apply for a loan yesterday and I had to mark my "Race".  They had all these different "Races" and I had to mark "Asian" which I hated!  What?  If you've got slant eyes and dark hair then you get lumped into one big gian pot of peoples?

Now I understand how you want to have your own identity as a Scot, Welsh, Irishman or Englishman.

I'm the lastone to ask about national identity.

Grandmother canadian

Fathers side irish

mothers side uber scottish

I was born in England and the family returned to Scotland when I was 5.

My heart and soul are Scottish and I am a product of the environment where I was brought up and family influences that makes me extremely mixed up at best. I worked in Holland for 3 years and I can tell you if you are on a job alone with no Brits you are so glad to hear anyone of the dialects from the British Isles we all pull in the same directionwhen it counts everything else is just aq series of wind ups.

So there it is I dont make a big thing of my nationality but I do want England home early from the world cup and I'm English (England is in crisis at the moment men are crying inthe street as the captain got injured and wont play)

Now if anyone put up a multi national team I'm buying the shirt

So informative.  Thanks!

Well now that we clueless Yanks have some background on UK & the individual nations, I would love to hear all of your thoughts on being a part of the EU.  Do most of the people in UK feel it's a positive thing?
