Are punchers born or made?

Adham the Spartan brought up a point in another thread where he said punchers are born not made. I have heard this statement over the years and discussed it with friends. One of my best friends is adamant that thus holds true. I believe the opposite. I believe that KO punchers can be made.
To me a KO punch is simply a case of kinetics, accuracy, technique and timing. If all four come together at once I believe it will produce a KO punch. If you drill it properly like any other technique it will produce the results!

In saying that I believe there are 'naturals', people that can effortlessly combine all the elements required. In this case then I agree it's a born puncher. If they have huge hands like Shane Carwin or Paul Daley then it's easy to believe they are born punchers.

I think I'm in the minority though because I believe non natural fighters with small hands can be taught how to throw KO bombs. What do you all think? I'm eager to hear your responses!

I agree that there are naturals who have the natural ability to punch hard just like power hitters in baseball. But Adham also spoke of muscle power being key. All are true to a certain extent but I think anyone can learn to fire a ko punch. You have a fighter who throws and just by sheer force gets the ko and then my favorite, the fighter who has put the technique work in, the sparring and can sense the ko is coming (timing and experience) and sets the punch up.

When I talk about a natural puncher, I am referring to people born with the tendency to throw punches more than kicks, elbows, knees, or headbutts.  I believe that in that aspect it is true to a certain extent, I believe that humans are more natural punchers than kickers that is why people with no training whatsoever tend to use only punches and no kicks.  However I believe that in the earlier stages of life one might be able to train the tendency out of a human. I was one such example starting TKD at the age of 5, I became a natural kicker, not a puncher. Even now with my Thai boxing and whatnot under my belt, I'll always be a kicker, though I am less of one now than I was before I did any boxing.  As for guys who can just knock people out cause they are so big, I don't call that natural ability when it comes to punching I just think they are at a sizable advantage when it comes to strength.

Interesting thread.  I have to weigh in on the side of those who believe you can make a KO striker.  I am one of them.  It took 4 fights and a total of about 4 to 5 years for me to figure it out but I was definitely made not born.  In fact, I punched and kicked "less hard" when I got my KO.  Hence our "80% is 100%" belief.

I've also seen students under go this transformation.  Kensei Sato has excellent technique.  Not a "Hard" puncher by any stretch but because of his use of "snap", rapid sucession striking and excellent placement, he's beginning to drop his opponents.  In 4 fights he's produced 2 knock downs.  Not bad for a 130 pounder.

Daniel Berry is another example.  I don't know if he's had a lot of KO's in his career but since he began training with us, I saw him absolutely demolish a guy with 1 punch.  I personally helped him develop it.  It was part of our anti-southpaw series.  Step ans Slide Left Right Hand.  His timing, placement, and snap all combined to effect an immediate knock down and the loss of 4 front teeth.  He's also in the lower weight group of 145 lbs.  I hold mits for him and I wouldn't say he brings down houses with his muscles or his "power".  But it doesn't matter.  Power is over rated in my opinion.  It's timing, placement, snap, succession, set up and technique.

I have a Lefty that I've been working on, Troy Dennison who is a natural puncher.  He had a number of KO's before joining us.  Since, he's actually had some difficulties adjusting to the new method.  Then again, he's also had a step up in the level of his competition as well.  But I feel like he's starting to see the overall big picture now and I'm excited to see what he's able to do in his next fight.  He was a big swinger with a lot of power.  I've been working on him to tighten up his form, work on his ability to set up his opponents and make his striking quicker, vs. "stronger".    We'll see how it goes.

Well..i am not made i am born..and not with strength only, but with technique and timing as well, my first session with punching in it in my life, i wasn't swinging like somebody's first session would be, i was doing Jab-Cross right (not 100% right, improved with time….but not as bad as someone's first day) i know that because i seen other first times and my coach told me that my boxing level was in the intermediate level in my first day..and i blew the mitt of hes hand with my first cross on a mitt..so yeah..that's what i mean by born not made..but of course my technique and power now can't be compared by that time, i am much better now with timing, range, experience..and so on, i also never used the snap round kick in my TKD days..without knowing it exist, i always used the Muay Thai one!..so yeah..that is what i think
