5 Big Questions for K-1 Grand Prix

1. Will the Bonjasky/Schilt era continue?

Not nearly enough attention has been paid to the way these two men have completely dominated the Grand Prix this decade. Six Grand Prix titles between them, and you have to go all the way back to Ernesto Hoost in 2002, seven years ago, for the last time someone else won it all. Their domination of the Grand Prix rivals that of Hoost/Aerts in the late 90s, and though neither man tops the last of K-1 fan favorites, there is no denying their skills. Despite all this, they are highly overlooked this year in favor of Hari and Overeem. But is it foolish to overlook these two? Will they continue to roll and make it seven years in a row at the top? Or…

2. Is now the time for the new generation to shine?

In 2008, K-1 put a heavy emphasis on the idea of the old v. new stars. This year they have not played that up as much, but it is undoubtedly there. Zimmerman has commented that he wants to take out Bonjasky to give fans new stars, and there is most definitely a movement of fans who are ready for a changing of the guard. With Aerts slowing down, Musashi gone, Le Banner and Sefo on their last legs, perhaps now is the time. Of course, the weight of the new generation rests squarely on the shoulders of one man…

3. Will Badr Hari get his revenge, and will he finally reach the top?

If Badr Hari wins, the message will be loud and clear – this is a new day in K-1. But his path to the crown has the potential for one of the most interesting runs in Grand Prix history. He's already set for the rubber match with Ruslan Karaev in round 1. Hari has gained revenge for his loss to Karaev, but another win here will help further erase that memory. After that, he will in all likelihood face the last man to defeat him – Alistair Overeem. Overeem humiliated Hari at Dynamite last year and there can be no doubt that Badr is itching to even the score. And shold he get through Overeem and make it to the finals the big question is – who will be across the ring from him? Will it be Semmy Schilt, in a rematch of the Hari blowout win earlier this year? Or will it be Bonjasky, the man who has knocked Hari out of the GP for the past two years? No offense to Semmy, but clearly, Hari v. Bonjasky is the match to hope for. One of the few top fighters Hari has never defeated, Bonjasky will forever stand in Badr's way until he topples him. Will this be the night, or…

4. Will Overeem continue to shock the K-1 world?

Even if Bonjasky makes the finals, there is no guarantee Hari will be there to face him. Alistair Overeem has been underrated by K-1 fans all year, but has managed to defeat Hari, hang in there for a close loss to Bonjasky, and knock Aerts out of the GP. He has many, many haters but the fact is Alistair Overeem has a very good chance of winning the Grand Prix. Some would love it, some would hate it, but it would definitely get the combat sports world talking.

5. Will Peter Aerts find a way to keep his streak alive?

The outside dark horse in all this is Peter Aerts. The Lumberjack has competed in every single Grand Prix since its inception in 1993. Now, thanks to Overeem, he is out. But not really. Chosen for a reserve fight, Aerts is still alive. If he gets through Gokhan Saki (which, frankly, he should) and if a fighter gets injured, we may see Aerts in it yet again. And it's happened before – in 2006 Aerts found himself in the same reserve position, but after a win over Musashi and a Bonjasky injury, Aerts was back in the semi-finals. For K-1 fans, this is a tough position. No one wants to root for a fighter to be injured, especially when the anticipated semi-finals are so enticing. But at the same time, there must be a part of every K-1 fan that wants to see Aerts in it again.
